Village of Crete Storm Update 08/12/26 11:30am
The Village of Crete including the Police, Fire, Public Works and EMA continue to actively respond to calls related to yesterday’s storms. Departments are working jointly in the operations center.
Yesterday afternoon the National Weather Service in Chicago confirmed our area to be affected by an EF-1 tornado, preliminary track is from Monee through Crete. This caused significant tree and power line damage, resulting in 99% of the Village to be without power. This affected previously damaged areas and utilities.
As of this release 81% of the Village continues to be without power, ComEd is in the area and working to restore services. Text OUT to 26633 to report your outage and receive updates.
Public Works has made significant progress making roads passable and removing debris. They will continue to work diligently to clean up curbside tree debris.
The Village is working with County and State partners to coordinate additional resources.
The Crete Police Department Lobby is temporarily open 24/7 as a charging & cooling center. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Joiliet at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 407 Irving St. The Village of Crete and Will County Emergency Management Agency are working on potential locations in our area. Currently, you may contact Will County 2-1-1 or the Red Cross at 1-800-RedCross for individual resource needs.
Generator Safety: After a storm, use generators safely by keeping them outdoors at least 20 feet from your home, with the exhaust pointed away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never run a generator in a garage or enclosed space, even if doors are open.
Tree Debris Clean Up Safety: When removing or chipping branches, wear protective gear, keep hands and loose clothing away from equipment, stack cut debris by the curb for pickup, keeping them clear of roads, sidewalks, and storm drains.
As more information becomes available and progress is made additional updates will be provided. We understand how impactful and frustrating these storm events are for our community. The Village of Crete remains committed to helping residents recover from these events.
