Crete Police Officers Honored

Crete Police Deputy Chief Groszek (right) and Detective Lucia were recognized at a recent Chicago Police Department awards ceremony, for their part in an investigation that resulted in the apprehension of Chicago gang member, Clifford D. Stokes.

On November 5th and December 7th of 2019, individuals stole approximately $20,000 worth of tools from Shorewood Home and Auto in Crete, IL. When detectives later processed the scene, DNA evidence was recovered and linked to Mr. Stokes – a known gang member and dangerous criminal.

Through further investigation and collaboration with a Chicago Police Task Force, DC Groszek and Detective Lucia were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Mr. Stokes. On February 28 of 2020, officers from the Task Force located and attempted to apprehend Mr. Stokes on Crete’s warrant. After initially fleeing in a stolen vehicle, Mr. Stokes was captured by members of the Task Force.

“I’d like to thank the Chicago Gang Enforcement Team Area South-Unit 312 for their assistance,” Crete Police Chief Pieritz said.

Mr. Stokes was held in Cook County and subsequently transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility in Joliet. He later pleaded guilty to Class 2 burglary.

“We’re dedicated to public safety and will pursue any criminal in our jurisdiction,” Chef Pieritz said.

He added that it is rare for outside police departments to be invited to Chicago Police Awards ceremonies, and that they were very grateful for our assistance.

Police Seeking Help Regarding Attempted Carjacking

Crete Police Chief Scott Pieritz released a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding an attempted carjacking incident in the Village.

“At approximately 3:00 a.m. this morning, officers were dispatched to the area of Brenner Court and Innsbruck Lane for a call of “shots fired.”,” the statement began.

Chief Pieritz says the victim told responding officers that after arriving home from work and sitting in their car, a tan or gold SUV pulled up behind and a black male suspect got out with a handgun and approached the victim in their vehicle.

“The victim placed their vehicle in reverse to get out of the area, and the suspect shot several rounds in their direction, striking their vehicle. The victim continued to drive in reverse, striking the suspect’s vehicle in the front passenger side. The victim fled the area in their vehicle and contacted the police,” Chief Pieritz said.

No injuries were reported and officers canvassed the area and collected evidence. Crete detectives are investigating the incident as attempted carjacking, and it appears so far to be an isolated incident.

Chief Pieritz is asking any witnesses, anyone with knowledge of a tan or gold SUV with damage corresponding to the episode, or residents who may have security footage of the incident, to contact Detective Lucia of the Crete Police Department.
