As a paid-on-call fire fighter for the Department, you will be responsible for responding to emergency calls, providing fire suppression and emergency services to the residents of Crete.

The job requires specialized training, mechanical aptitude, endurance, strength, courage, dependability, and selflessness. This is a job that puts you in the public eye and requires positive interaction with the citizens who need our services. How do you join?

Embark on a demanding and very satisfying career as a member of the Crete Fire Department; you will be competing against others for a limited number of openings. The Crete Fire Department is constantly seeking applicants for “paid-on-call” firefighters and reviews applications when there are openings in the paid-on-call division. The hiring process is as follows:

  • Application
  • Interview
  • Background Check
  • Physical
  • Approval from Fire Chief
  • Fire Fighter II Academy
  • EMT-B Program
  • Six months – one year probation period

Minimum Requirements:

  • 18 years old
  • US citizen
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license

Paid On Call:

Embark on a demanding and very satisfying career as a member of the Crete Fire Department. The Crete Fire Department is constantly seeking applicants for “paid-on-call” firefighters and reviews applications year round for the paid-on-call division. The hiring process is as follows:

  • Application
  • Interview
  • Background check
  • Pre-employment physical
  • Approval from Fire Chief
  • Firefighter Academy
  • EMT-B program
  • Six months to one year probation period

Minimum Requirements:

  • 18 years old
  • US citizen
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Reside within the allowable response area of the Village of Crete

Part-Time Firefighter/Paramedic:

  • Applications can be obtained from the Village Hall at 524 W. Exchange Street
  • Applicant for the classification of firefighter/paramedic shall be licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a licensed paramedic in good standing within a recognized Illinois system hospital at the time of application to the Crete Fire Department
  • Applicant must be State of Illinois Certified Firefighter (Basic or FFII with Hazmat Operations, Technical Rescue Awareness and Fire Service Vehicle Operator)
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age
  • Applicant must be of good moral character, sound health, and must be physically able to perform the duties of the position. The burden of establishing these facts rest upon the applicant
  • If applicable, the applicant shall furnish a copy of his/her military service record and discharge papers
  • Prior to an appointment, candidates must pass a full background investigation and medical examination

Cadet Program:

The Crete Fire Department Cadet/Explorer program has been established to allow qualified young adults between the ages 14-18 to learn about the fire service.

The program will serve to provide the youth of our community with positive role models and career guidance.

Cadets will be taught the basics of firefighter and emergency medical services. All training is hands on with supervision from instructors within the department. The program is a volunteer program and not a paid position.
