Freedom Seeker/Underground Railroad Stories
December 6, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Local author, Larry McClellan, will present stories related to the Underground Railroad with an emphasis on Will County connections. This will be part of a book-signing event for his latest work: Onward to Chicago: Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad in Northeastern Illinois, published in September of this year by Southern Illinois University Press.
Recently Larry and the book were awarded the 2023 Memorial Prize for the Advancement of Knowledge in Underground Railroad research given by the Underground Railroad Free Press, the key online sources for all this research across the country. The Free Press called this “the finest book yet . . . . for a close-up look at the Underground Railroad as it actually happened.”
Larry will have copies of this and his earlier books available for purchase and signing. One of the founders of Governors State University in 1970, Larry has been doing research on the UGRR and on the history of the Chicago Southland for many years. He worked with the Crete Area Historical Society to successfully nominate the Crete Congregational Church and Cemetery to the national listing of UGRR sites maintained by the National Park Service Network to Freedom program.
