Crete Street Signs to Honor Residents from the Community.
A resolution to allow for honorary street names in Crete was introduced by Village Board member John Phelan and passed by the board earlier this year. Trustee Phelan says the goal of the initiative is to honor residents of the community who have had historical or cultural significance—or who have simply helped make Crete a better place.
Phelan says he drew inspiration from similar efforts in other places, such as Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, where ‘Mike the Hot Dog Man’ was honored after serving hot dogs and tamales to the community for 65 years. “In Chicago, they decided to have the street named after him, and allow them to have the honor of their name on a street, and I think that’s a great idea,” said Trustee Phelan.
The Crete Village Board agreed, and the program is now set to begin on April 15th. Crete residents can nominate names for honorary street signs by submitting a written application online. A fee is required to cover the cost of the sign, and final approval will be made by the Village Board. Each sign will remain in place for 12 months, after which it will be given to the honoree or their family.
“It’s nice for the community. It’s a great way to bring people together. There are many people worthy of this honor in Crete. Let’s use our imagination and create some good suggestions,” Phelan added. To nominate someone for an honorary street sign, visit https://villageofcrete.org/honorary-street-naming-form/
