Crete and Steger First Responders were honored at the last Village board meeting.

Crete Fire’s Michael Crivellone, Michael Swiat, and Dan Wysocki, assisted by Brendan Munoz from Steger FD, responded to a call for an unresponsive person in Crete on July 6 of this year.

Chuck and Cris Letko were quietly celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at home when Chuck suddenly lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Cris immediately called 911 and their neighbor, Tim, for help. First Responders arrived within minutes and began life-saving measures. They were able to revive Chuck, and he was transported to Franciscan in Dyer, eventually making a full recovery.

Crete Fire Assistant Chief Ken Wilkens praised the team’s efforts: “Without this required 100-plus hours of per-person medical training, these firefighter EMTs and paramedics would not have been able to perform this task of advanced life care with great success.”

Chief Wilkens emphasized the importance of having well-trained emergency personnel: “It’s a perfect example of why all these firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics are important to our community and elsewhere.”

We’re grateful for the dedication and skill of the first responders, who turned a potential tragedy into a story of hope and gratitude. #CreteHeroes #FirstResponders #CommunityHeroes
