Volunteers distributed free food to more than 150 families at Heritage Park last month in partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Will County, the Crete Library, the Village of Crete, and the Crete Park District.
The drive-through distribution began at 4 p.m., offering milk, eggs, produce, meat, and other food items to anyone who showed up. The line of cars stretched down Sangamon Street, with the Crete Emergency Management Agency directing traffic. The Crete Police Department assisted when backups spilled onto Exchange Street.
Due to the large turnout, supplies began running low after just 30 minutes.
“It’s been a great success. We’ve been able to serve over 150 families,” said David Sieffert, Executive Director of the Crete Library. “We’re really happy to see people come out and have community support to help our neighbors.”
Additional events are not currently scheduled in Crete. More food distribution events can be found at solvehungertoday.org.
