With deep sadness, the Village of Crete mourns the loss of our beloved Fire Chief, James “JP” Muirhead.

Chief Muirhead passed away at 4:56 am this morning, following an unexpected and serious medical condition. Chief Muirhead, who joined the Crete Fire Department in July of 2022, began his 34-year career at the Matteson Fire Department as a paid-on-call firefighter. He later served as a Lieutenant at the Crete Township Fire Protection District, and as Deputy Chief at the Riverdale Fire Department.

Known for his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the Crete community and his fellow firefighters, Chief Muirhead was instrumental in the recruitment and training of new personnel. His leadership, dedication, kindness, and good humor left an impression on all who had the privilege of meeting him.

During this difficult time, we kindly ask the public to keep Chief Muirhead’s family in their thoughts and prayers.

Thank you, Chief Muirhead, for your dedicated service. You are greatly missed.
