Winter Tips for Pets

PAWSitive Information for Your Pets This Winter Season
Animals can get frostbite on ears, tails, and paws, please be conscious of the amount of time your pets are left outside.
  • When salting sidewalks and commonly used pathways, when possible please use pet friendly salt.
  • Numerous items on your holiday shopping list can be harmful to your pets. Poinsettias, onions, chocolate, garlic, grapes, and coffee are a few items that can cause serious illness to your pets. A more detailed list can be found at Pets Poison Help Line or 800-213-6680.
  • Make sure cords from Christmas trees/lights/space heaters aren’t readily available to pets to chew on.
  • Please dispose of antifreeze properly. Antifreeze has an inviting smell and sweet flavor. Its appealing smell and taste often tempt animals and even children to drink the highly poisonous substance.
  • If you happen to have a pet that stays outside year round make sure it has adequate shelter, access to water 24/7 (snow doesn’t count as a water source), and for additional warmth some straw in and around the shelter. Blankets are nice, but they often get wet and frozen not allowing the animal to stay warm.
  • Animals will try to seek warmth and shelter in numerous locations which can include but aren’t limited to wheel wells and engine compartments on your vehicle. Beeping your horn before starting your vehicle just might save a life.
